About DAMMS founder, Phoebe Walker

About the founder - Phoebe

PHOEBE WALKER, MA

In 2001, while pursuing her heart’s desire of pre-medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mrs. Walker’s educational plans were abruptly derailed with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.

Phoebe has been living with debilitating Multiple Sclerosis since 2001 and has more lesions between her brain and spine than the doctors can count. In 2006, she spent a year blind and completely incapacitated due to the disease. It took everything she had to fight her way back, regaining most of her abilities and eyesight. Fortunately, the disease did not deter her from continuing her educational aspirations.

Today, Phoebe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, a Master of Arts degree in Leadership, and a Life Coaching certification. Her tenacity and hard work culminated in the publication of her undergraduate research on the embryology of a rare and threatened species of fish in a peer-reviewed journal. You can click to see the article under her former name, Gretchen Walker. Click to see article. Additionally, it's important to note that Mrs. Walker presented this research at an annual science symposium in front of an auditorium filled with academic professionals.

Now, with over 30 years of experience in service, she has guided individuals through life crises, trained and led youth in community service, and worked to raise awareness of various health conditions through charity events.

Additionally, she has over 25 years of experience in public speaking, presenting on personal development at churches, shelters, and public venues. Her talks emphasize overcoming hardships with effective coping mechanisms, provide information on health issues, and motivate individuals to take action for their personal growth, pain management, and living a fulfilling and joyful life.

This journey has helped Phoebe to cultivate her strengths, both academically and personally, rooted in a strong foundation of faith. She has discovered what works for her and developed a guidance style that emphasizes the principles of mindful living.

She continues her life in service through both this nonprofit and her consulting sessions, Consultingwithphoebe.com.
